The Sunday Tribune Jeep Hill 2 Hill

The Sunday Tribune Jeep Hill 2 Hill will never be an easy event, but throw in a bit of heat (which was measured at 49 degrees in some places) and the race is a cruel test of everything, from skills and fitness to mental strength and the ability to push through cramp-induced pain. Despite the tough conditions 70% of the 102km field managed to struggle to the finish, while 77% of the 47km riders were able to achieve their goal.

Up front the racing was fascinating as a huge group of 16 swept along Bisley Road but was whittled down to just eight after Burry Stander won the Marshall King of the Hills sprint. That group was further reduced to just Stander, Brandon Stewart, Kevin Evans and David George at Bartletts Hill with 30km to go, but after the technical Woodcutters section Stander had made the decisive break and it was a time trial as he rode away to a four-minute victory over George and then Stewart.

Evans punctured and was caught by Mannie Heymans and Phillip Buys which set up a sprint for fourth which the wily veteran Heymans won from Evans with Buys ending sixth.

In the women's event, Mariske Strauss dominated things until the Queen of the Hill hotspot and then sat up and let Stopforth and Yolandi du Toit ride away. Stopforth battled with a slow puncture on her experimental Continental tyres but managed to fight back and beat du Toit with Strauss pacing herself home in third.

Being a tough race it was not about the first riders across the line. Everybody who managed to finish the race were winners in their own right.

Would of really like to thank everyone involved with the Hill to Hill was a very enjoyable ride..

Think their should of been a 3Rd water station towards the end nothing fancy like the others. As I saw many people taking taking strain due to lake of fluids..

Many Thanks

Sean Melville
