Once again the weather proved to be favourable for another Big 5 series race, the Wetland Water Monzi Hippo, the 4th race in the 5 race series. A record 517 riders made their way up to the picturesque Monzi Country Club to test their ability in the fastest race of the series. This area lies on the southern perimeter of the new World Heritage Site of the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park and the scenic track certainly allowed riders to take in the attractive views. The Zululand heat, a few sandy sections and a slight twist in the tail consisting of a section of hills 7kms from the end, proved to test most riders as the day progressed. This did nothing to deter the two fastest riders of the day Shaun Merridew and Tyron White from clocking a phenomenal time of 1h45 minutes with an adrenalin pumping race to the finish that saw Shaun pipping Tyron at the post by a mere millisecond. The ladies 50km race also had an exciting finish and was once again won by Nadine Cahill in a time of 2h.06minutes followed by Hayley Smith a mere 6 seconds later. In the 25km race Craig Campbell in 1st position, ahead of Shaun White by 2 minutes and in the Ladies race Ballito rider Shirley Anne Browne winning by a margin of 4 minutes to her closest competitor Delia Van Den burgh. A great day was had by all and the carnaval atmosphere with free bike washes, food stalls, skydiving, kids entertainment, proved to be a great draw card for riders and spectators alike.
