MOUNTAIN SPLENDOUR MANIA 2011
Mountain Splendour Mania was held on the weekend of the 22-24 July at Mountain
Splendour Eco-Resort in the Central Drakensberg. This ever popular mountain
biking weekend was first staged in 2005 through the partnership of multisport/cycling guru Iain Don Wauchope and Dave Ward of Ward Events.

2011 was once again a huge success with some 600 riders over the weekend.
The entire weekend was centered on fun for the entire family in the Berg on their
bikes. Most of the 100 camp sites where fully booked way in advance of the weekend and a special atmosphere was created with some 500 people in the camp site.

This year two trail running events were added to the weekends programme with a 7.5km Night Race on Friday night and 15km Trail Run on Saturday afternoon. Both these races were convincingly won by Grant Harper from Durban.

Saturday morning was the Mountain Splendour Mania X/C Lap Race. The route
was 5 laps on 5.5km single track around the resort property. The results saw
Andrew Hill in 1st place followed by Hylton Frost and Klaas Meintjes in 3rd. The 3
lap race was won by Bryce Rawlins, Gareth Andrews in 2nd and James Damant in
3rd. The 15km MTB Night race on Saturday night was won by Marc Adam, followed
by Francois Ferreira and Stefan van Eck.

The Sunday morning was the chance for the MTB riders to show their skills on the
brand new 40km and 20km courses with the 10km course in and around the
Mountain Splendour Resort. The 40km Super Classic proved a tough test of pure
mountain biking through nearby farmlands and Cathkin Estate and participants
were pushed to their limits. This race was won by Andrew Hill, 2nd place to Kyle
Dorkin and 3rd to Travis Walker. The 20km Sub Junior was an all family affair with
Julian Jessop in 1st, brother Thomas in 2nd and Cameron Wright in 3rd. The 20km Intermediate was won by David Muller, 2nd place Craig Wright and 3rd Mark
Walker.

All age groups were catered for with kiddie's races on both Saturday and Sunday.
The final prize giving was held on Sunday with lots of prizes for all age categories
and lots of lucky give away prizes.
