The Royal Drakensburg MTB Challenge

28 January 2015

Over 300 people joined in for a beautiful weekend at All Out Adventures in the Northern Berg.  Despite an unseasonably wet May, the weather held and Friday night's 15km Night Ride and Chicken Potjie went down a treat.  Saturday dawned warm and sunny, if not a little windy, and as promised, the N3TC 45km Challenge provided plenty of just that - over 1000 meters of climbing and some gnarly down hills.  The ramp Big Air finish was a hit, and only claimed a few casualties…. The tough course was completed in a time of 2:21:30 with Jean - Pierre Ten Napel taking first place.  The first lady home was Marita Williams, 23rd overall, in a time of 3:46:09.

The scenic Montusi Mountain Lodge 19km Intermediate ride followed a new and speedy descent into the stunning Montusi gorge, and up the arduous Secret Pass.  The technical Waterfall Challenge saw several riders making repeated attempts but sliding back down into the stream, and eventually being relegated to "easy way" up the steps on the side! Remember your middle gear and momentum for next year!  Although challenging, the route was thoroughly enjoyed by all participants, with Jeremy Green finishing in first place in 1:05:26.  The first lady home was Ronel Ten Napel in 1:18:24.

The Alpine Heath 10km Beginner Ride was well attended, with young and old riders alike (oldest rider being 84!) enjoying the river side meander and the awesome treats provided at the Cavern Berg Resort's water table at the half way point.

The 15km and 7km trail runs took runners through some pristine mountain scenery, and a couple of runners made it back in time to join in with the mountain bike rides.  First man home in the 15km run was Jeremy Green (again!) in a time of 1:19:48.  First lady was Rozanne van Deventer in 1:39:08.  The 7km run was won by young S'pamandla Majola, a local development athlete, in a time of 0:55:11.

Spectators took full advantage of the awesome Kids Zone, excellent coffee, tasty food and myriad of adventure activities offered by All Out Adventures

The weekend, held for the benefit of royal Drakensberg Primary school, was a wonderful success, with great feedback received about the trails, the scenery, and the excellent marking and marshalling.  A big thank you to all involved for their ongoing support of Royal Drakensberg Primary School, and to the participants who made it such a fantastic weekend.   We are looking forward to next year!
