From the time we saw the banana peel being tossed out of the A batch pound ahead of the start to the CycleLab Wartburg 45km MTB classic race, we knew that the monkeys were going to be a handful. And so they were, the UK based Orange Monkey-Cannondale team added some serious talent to the front end of the race. Normally monkeys make a mess, but these guys cleaned-up. They filled the podium with the defending champion Rourke Croeser taking first place and team mates Dave Fletcher and Ben Roff taking second and third. In the ladies race, Lee Craigie who hails from Scotland and is spending time in RSA as a guest of the Orange Monkey team, won in spectacular fashion ahead of Natalie Bergstrom and Jackie Church.

In the BP Supa Quick 25km race, the men's race was won by Craig Jarret and the ladies by local lass Frankie du Toit. First prize in the Spur 10km fun ride went to Simon Apfel in the boys under 12yrs and Jessica Behrens, another local, in the girls under 12yrs. The day kicked off with the Wartburg Spar 10km trail run for cyclists with a running problem and this was won by Marc Matthews who went on to complete the 45km race as well. The first lady home was Monique van Deventer.

Nearly 1400 cyclists completed the various distances on the day and praise for the meticulously prepared course was fulsome with special mention of the several kilometers of new single track added to the old faithfuls. A huge thank you must be extended to the hundreds of volunteers from the Wartburg Kirchdorf School community who pitched in to ensure a very successful event and also to the local land owners who generously allow us access to these otherwise unseen gems.

Thank you too to all those in the MTB community who have made the Cycle Lab Wartburg Classic one of the must do events on the KZN calendar.
