It had been perfect weather all day, with the sun shining shortly before sunset and within an hour of the start of race 2 of the KZN Trail Series - a night race through the tracks & trails of Giba Gorge. With 6 minutes to go the wind suddenly changed direction and within a minute it was raining like a monsoon, complete with thunder and lightning crackling overhead.

It was a game changer for many - with 70 runners bailing within 5 minutes of the start. For those 127 who ran they had an experience that was worth the soaking & wild stormy conditions. Trail running the streaming trails of Giba in the black of night, with the force of nature thundering overhead. Priceless.

More waterfalls & rivers than expected
The 10.5km Championship course was a spectacular single track fest right to the heart of the thickly forested Giba Gorge, crossing numerous rivers in the process - and in this case more than usual!
Myles Usher set the fastest time on the night with a time of 48:41. 29 seconds behind was Mark Mitchell with Sbo Bione right on his tail.

Jackie Moore won the ladies race by 34 seconds in a time of 59:12, with Jetaime Ribbink in 2nd and Christine Whitfield in 3rd - a mere 9 seconds behind Ribbink.

11 year old inspires
Senzo Gumede pulled off a narrow 5 second win over Wester von Biljon in the 5km short course Challenge presented by Spur Gumede completing the course in 27:46.

Roxanne Vale dominated the ladies race to win in a time of 30:27 - three minutes ahead of 2nd place Claire Harms.
But it was 11 year old Abbey-Lynn Haswell who inspired runners & crew alike, running in 14th overall in the 5km short course challenge and finishing in 32:17.

Half way through
There are two more races left in the 2012 Trail Series, the 2nd night race next week Wednesday 24th OCt at Kenneth Stainbank followed by the final race on the 27th Oct at Virginia Trails - including a 21-26km XL route.

We encourage you please to each bring along one new person you know to come and enjoy the Trail Series experience and help us make sure we return to KZN in 2013!

Thank you to the Trail Series premier sponsors adidas & Spur, as well as product sponsors Protea Hotels & 100Plus
