SUN SHINES ON LYNFORD CLOVER CLASSIC

The Lynford Clover Classic (9 September, Lynford School, Ixopo) dawned sunny and bright - much to the relief of organizers, who had spent the preceding days valiantly rerouting track in mud and pouring rain. Eager mountain bikers (who were undeterred by the prospect of mud) relished the exciting  two loop track, which wound through the forests and dairy farmland of the Ixopo district.  Brandon Davids (fresh from racing in the USA) streaked to overall  victory in a time of 1:50:36, followed by Carl Calverly (1:52:51) and local farm boy, Craig Stone (01:59:45). Evan van der Spuy managed to avoid close encounters with dairy cows and won the Junior section in a time of 2:01:19.  First woman home was local lass Bianca Haw (2:23:11). The 25 km intermediate race was won by Brett Reinhardt (01:29:17). Craft stalls, clowns ,ziplines, farmers in tutus, trail runs, motorbike enduro riding, paintball, foozball , bands, choirs, aerial displays, giant slides and loads more contributed to the carnival-like atmosphere.  The streamlined version of the weekend attracted a steady stream of visitors and the happy atmosphere was often remarked on - a real celebration of the local community.

The weekend was great even with the mud. Well done to course organisers for sensible route planning. The trail run was tough but good fun. Mtb Classic was a very good race except for the lack of water at the 25km mark. Found everything else was very well planned.
