Subaru MTB Classic

The Subaru MTB Classic, the first for 2012, held on Sunday 29 January 2012 attracted some 1 400 participants for a day of sun and fun (for some) on the Cedara Farm and in the plantations surrounding Cedara.

The rain had stayed away and the route was in excellent condition.

The 40km event with over 500 riders, included 17km of exhilarating (daunting for some), single track. The organisers this year excluded the climb to the foot of Swartkops Mountain believing that the route would be tough enough without including Inyoka climb. However, judging by Travis Walker's winning time of 01:45:43, these concerns were ungrounded. Travis Walker was followed by Brandon Stewart (01:45:53) and then Luke Roberts (01:45:55). But then, with the last riders finishing in five and a half hours, maybe the concern was justified.

The intermediate event (27km) also attracted over 500 riders and included some 10km of single track riding. A close tussle developed with Thomas Jessop (01:22:14) pipping Ewan Cochran (01:22:17) over the finish line. The day took its toll with the last rider finishing in just under 4 hours.

The fun ride (11km) in the Cedara farm lands attracting a field of some 200 riders was in the form of a figure eight with riders having the option of only completing the first 5km loop if they wanted to. With a mean hill (for a fun ride) included in the first loop, the option of calling it quits halfway through was welcomed by some, considering that the second loop included the notorious Rotunda hill.

Thanks must go to Subaru Pietermaritzburg for their continuing support and to Mondi and Singisi Forest Products for granting the mountain biking community the privilege of practicing our wonderful sport in their properties. The event could also not have been staged without the support and cooperation of the Cedara farm management.

Also a big thanks goes to Chris Brand for the fantastic job done on the course. Only positive comments which is awesome.
