IN a battle of the provinces Cape Town’s Lourens Luus from RE:CM edged ahead on the final climb to claim victory from local rider and defending champ Andrew Hill at a closely contested Compendium MTB Derby held in and around Shongweni on Sunday 26th May.

Luus’s teammate Waylon Woolcock claimed third with another local, Andrew Warr, fourth after suffering some mechanicals issues over the second half of the course. These four riders and Erik Kleinhans quickly built a lead over a field of just over 1 000 riders on the first climb of the race.

Kleinhans, also a member of RE:CM who are part sponsored by Compendium, crashed after about 14km and the resultant injured knee left the other four to fight for line honours. In the tight single track section of Giba Gorge, Hill and Luus managed to get a small gap and then on the final steep climb up to the finish, the 21-year-old Luus was able to make the race-winning break and set up his victory.

Jeannie Bomford continued her good run of form to beat former Hungarian champion Eszter Erdelyi with Brenda Potts claiming third.

In the 23km event Brian Sclanders claimed victory over Team ROAG rider Aaron Michell, but the heroine of the day was young sub junior Tiffany Keep who showed the boys a thing or two by finishing third overall.
