BARRYDALE. – Despite the temperature reaching north of 30 degrees and more challenging routes, the fifth Renosterbos MTB  and trail running challenge that took place on Saturday, 7 September 2013 in Barrydale was a great success. No less than 200 people took part in the mountain bike races of 35km en 71km respectively as well as the 13km trail run.

The 71km mountain bike race was a particularly important event on the mountain biking calendar as it was the only qualifying race this year for WP colours and a placement race for the FNB Wines2Whales MTB challenge taking place in November 2013.

Daniel Minnaar, who took the top spot among the men, agrees that that the hills were a challenge, but enjoyed the race nonetheless. He finished in a time of 1.1.35.

Something for the taste buds at this year's Renosterbos event

Participants and their supporters enjoyed a sumptuous breakfast prepared by the winners of the 2013 kykNET Kokkedoor finalists, amongst others one of the top chefs in this year's competition, Tiaan Langenegger. Five lucky spectators were also invited to try their hand at cooking with the kykNet Kokkedoor finalists (Tiaan, Marinda Engelbrecht, Mathilda Venter, Aletta Coetzee en Rendil Pieterse). The challenge? To prepare a winning dish within 60 minutes, using the ingredients: ostrich steak, ostrich sausage, green figs and red wine. The cook-off was supervised by another Kokkedoor finalist, Toinette du Toit, and judged by the chefs Francois Ferreira and Errieda du Toit along with guest judge Beate Joubert (of Barrydale). The judges agreed that the quality of the dishes served were of an incredibly high standard and full of flavour. But, as with any competition, there could be only one winner. Congratulations to Marco Olivier of Riversdal and Mathilda who served the winning dish: Karoo ostrich pizza with a taste of the Cape.

We would also like to thank our sponsors without which the day would not have been possible. Part of the proceeds will be donated to Net vir Pret, a local non-profit organisation that facilitates after school and holiday programmes for learners from less privileged communities.
