Event 3 – Eston Club, Sunday 11th August

The weather could not have been better for the third and final event in the Varsity College Multisport Series which took place at Eston Club on Sunday 11th August.

The recent rain was enough to settle the dust and clear the air, resulting in a gorgeous winter’s day in the beautiful Eston countryside.

The trail runners were the first to break the tracks as they set off to a chilly start. Fresh off winning the Junior Women at the KZN Cross-Country Championships the previous afternoon, the talented Gena Lofstrand was first home overall in the 5km Trail Run in a super fast time of seventeen minutes and fifty-eight seconds. Jody Taylor led the men home in twenty minutes and twenty-two seconds. The regulars were back in action in the 15km Trail Run with Mdu Zondi and Owen Bengo taking their third successive one-two positions while respected triathlete Donovan van Gelder placed third overall. Wendy Morgan was first women home ahead of Nonsikelelo Mbambo (who is recovering from a dog bite) and Babongile Memela in third.

With the change of venue from Albert Falls Dam to Eston Club, the multisport race had to be cancelled due to the lack of water facility. However, the Multi-X athletes were out in force to take on the fast tracks and trails through the sugarcane lands.

It was none other than Xterra racer Tyrone White who held off a strong challenge to win the Multi-X Long Course (over a 5km Trail Run, 20km MTB and 2.5km Trail Run) in an impressive time of one hour, ten minutes and six seconds. Mitchell Ginsberg was only forty-four seconds back in second place with Daniel Carlton close behind in third.

The women’s race was a copy paste from the previous event with Kim Westbrook claiming her second successive win ahead of a strong effort from Sarah Gray to place second with Jade Redman racing well to claim third place.

In the Short Course Multi-X Dean Wortmann continued to dominate, claiming a solid win ahead of Campbell van Rooyen while Jody Taylor placed third having already completed the 5km Trail Run earlier in the day ! Young Tiffany Keep was a worthy winner in the women’s race ahead of her rival and friend Courtney Smith while veteran Su Nugent placed third.

The fast winning time of one hour, twenty-six minutes and ten seconds for the 40km Mountain Bike race was indication not only of the fast open course but also the quality of the winning rider in Luke Roberts who was obviously putting in some last minute speed training ahead of the UCI MTB World Championships taking place in Pietermaritzburg at the end of the month.

A good effort from Evan van der Spuy who placed second just over two and a half minutes behind Roberts while Robert du Preez took third place. Linda Potts was the winning women in the 40km ahead of Girtie Steenkamp and Zurika Wright.

Merik Sparg once again won the 20km Mountain Bike race while Kimberley le Court, another contender for the UCI MTB World Championships, took the women’s win.

The event was concluded amidst much fun and hilarity with the Varsity College Inter-Campus Games Challenge which saw a tight tussle evolve between the three campuses; in the end it was the Maritzburg Mammoths who walked off with the trophy on the accumulated points over the three part series. A good effort from the Westville Cowboys in second and full marks to the Durban North Pirates for hosting the final event.
